Announcing ... The Welsh Society of Editors
The Society of Editors is a professional Society, open only to
professional editors who have successfully passed a difficult editing
test set by the Director. These editors are available for freelance
and contract work and may be located by contacting the email address
on this page. Editors' names and qualifications (for example, specialist
areas and disciplines in which they are experienced) will be published
on these pages.
Editors who wish to obtain membership of the Society are also invited
to contact the Director by email from this page. Applicants will
receive either electronically or by mail a copy of an editing test
which should be completed and returned within a specified time-frame.
Successful completion of the test (which involves dealing with spelling,
punctuation, abbreviations, grammar, style, copyright, plagiarism
and historical dates) qualifies the editor for membership.
Membership will cost £40 sterling per year and includes a
membership certificate and access to monthly meetings to which a
guest speaker will be invited. Guests may include society members
who have dealt with particular problems or who have information
to offer.
There will also be a quarterly contact newsletter to which editors
will be invited to contribute. Clients contacting the society will
be referred to editors with appropriate experience in a given field.
The society aims
- To raise the consciousness of government departments, corporate
entities and private writers about the need for skilful editing
in order to assist in the communication process
- To promote writing which is unified, clear and coherent
- To raise the profile of editing as a service profession, offering
the benefit of editing skills to publishers, government and corporate
bodies and to individual writers at an agreed rate
- To provide services in both English (UK, Australian and US)
and Welsh
- To provide a contact point for members to obtain work
- To provide a professional society for contact among editors
and to offer information and guidance to individual editors including
issues of legal liability, editing contracts, editors' and clients'
rights, and a common rate of payment for all editors in the society.
Members will agree to observe the society's guidelines in the
matter of payment, invoicing and contracts.
If you would like to become a member of the Society of Editors,
