From January 2003... intensive small-group courses for
writers! (maximum of six per course)
Each course will be held on one day a week for four weeks.
The fee of £100/concession £80 covers:
all handouts, pen and paper, morning and afternoon tea and light
lunch.
- POETRY WRITING
What is a poem? What is the difference between poetic language
and everyday language? What are imagery, metaphor and other tropes?
What are the poetic metres? We will explore all these issues by
looking at the work of successful poets, we will write a different
kind of poem each week, and on completion, we will put together
a book of our poetry. (The course does not include the structure
of Welsh-language poetry.)
- CRAFTING THE SHORT STORY
What are the features of a short story? How do you plot? Looking
at characterisation, dialogue, and language. How short is 'short'?
We read examples of various kinds of short story, and produce
our own each week for reading and assessment. At the end of the
course, we'll put together a collection of our stories.
- WRITING FEATURE ARTICLES
So you would like to publish non-fiction! Let's look then at the
various kinds of non-fiction -- the 'modes of writing', and see
what features characterise them. We will produce four different
kinds of article, and we'll learn what magazine and newspaper
editors are looking for. Each week, we will study some contemporary
articles and each week, we will write a different kind of article
of our own for reading and assessment. At the end of the course,
we'll put together a collection of our articles.
